About Me

My photo
My name is Anna, and I work as a primary school teacher in greater London. I love eating pizza and watching TV with my husband. I also love painting glass, and any other crafty pursuits that give me a chance to make a mess! I am on a bit of a mission to learn how to cook, bake, sew and generally make things before I have children. I'm trying to learn something new each day. I really value your support, so thank you for following me xx

French Onion Soup

So in my quest to learn something new each day, I though I'd have a go at making onion soup using the ridiculous amount of onions I had in the fridge. It turned out pretty well - but it was one of those meals that taste great at the time but you can regret eating too much of!

This made enough for 2 large bowls:

350g shopped onion, 20g butter, olive oil, 3 tsp sugar, 900ml beef sock, 1/2 glass white wine, 1tbsp flour.

Add oil and butter to the pan, and cook the chopped onion on a medium/low heat until very soft and golden (aprox 40 mins  - I should have left them a bit longer though!)

Add flour, sugar, stock and white wine. bring to the boil and simmer for 40 mins.

Ladel into soup bowls ( I didn't have any!) Top with toasted bread and cheese and bake in oven on a medium heat for 20 mins

Here we go! I only had low fat cheese - so it didn't melt quite as well! But it tasted good.  Next time I'd have a bit less soup and more bread.

                                                          What are you cooking today?

Handmade Monday - Bits and Bobs

Happy bank holiday Monday!

I've been up to lots of bits and pieces this week. Had lots of fun with my new sewing machine - but nothing to show yet really! I'm working on a skirt right now, so hoping that will end up as something worth sharing!

On the subject of sewing, here are some adorable little phone socks my class made this week:

Bearing in mind that at the start of the lesson, they didn't know which end of the needle to use - I think they did pretty well!

Here are a couple of makes from this week:

I'm not all that pleased with the last one, I was just trying out some new colours really and my purple seems to have gone a bit gloopy.

The most excitment this week, comes from a discovery in wilko - check out these beauties!

These glasses are ENORMOUS! and only £4 for 4. Can't wait to get started with them - and I've got just the person in mind to give the first one to.

Don't forget to check out Handmade Monday

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The children have finished their exams and we are now looking forward to their future and thinking about their transition to secondary school. Scary stuff!

They thought about what a film about their life so far might be called - and designed a poster of it. I decided mine would be called ' Diary of a Small Girl' (as I'm 4"11) - but didn't share that one with them!

Then we looked at time lines of our lives - and once again they gasped in horror when they heard that I am 25 ("Oh my god - you are OLD!"). Thanks kids.

We spoke about what we'd like to be on our timelines in 10 years time. I am always inspired by their ambition and complete belief that all of their dreams would of course come true - why wouldn't they?

One of them is going to be a part time crime scene investigator and teach sport the rest of the time. Another is going to be a lawyer and a footballer, and one is going to be a sports coach and  a mechanic. Why not?!

When I was their age, I wanted to be an artist. Plain and simple. That ambition died a death after some nasty a-levels. But now I am a teacher who comes home to do arty, crafty things in her living room while watching 'Come Dine With Me' - so I like to think I'm fulfilling that ambition in a round about way, and the 5 year old me wouldn't be too disappointed. Anyway, I'm not grown up yet - no matter what the kids think!

So, what do you want to be when you grow up?

Hope you've had a lovely Tuesday,
Anna x

Handmade Monday - Sorry it's been a while!

Oh dear, what a terrible blogger I have been of late! My lovely husband has been working on my website (very exciting!) which links to my blog so I've not been able to use it much.

Anyhoo. Hope everyone has had a lovely week. The poor year 6s had their Sats last week - so now looking forward to the 2 weeks before half term being full of crafty fun. We're making phone socks next week - will be sure to take some pictures!

A few things that have made me smile this week:

I emptied out my coin jar and got a brand new, shiny, easy for beginners to use... sewing machine!

I did my first hem yesterday - I was so proud!

I stumbled across this lovely lady and would like to share her website with anyone who hasn't seen it. I'm very jealous of her ability to make anything look beautiful and the way she manages to bake, craft, garden, raise twins and still blog everyday!

Here are some things I've been up to:

Have a wonderful week. I'm looking forward to sharing some sewing machine makes with you as soon as I have something other than hems!

Please check out some wonderful blogs at Hand Made Monday
